  • New York City (NYC) is taking steps to enhance subway security by implementing a pilot program to install gun scanners at subway stations. These scanners, called Evolv gun detectors, will be tested in select underground locations. They are portable, easy to relocate, and designed for quick installation. While some concerns exist about the technology’s accuracy, NYC aims to address recent high-profile crimes and reassure the public.

  • Microsoft reaffirms its commitment to protecting customer data privacy as businesses increasingly use generative AI tools like Azure OpenAI Service and Copilot. The company ensures that customer data is not used for training models without permission and is not shared with third parties. Microsoft emphasizes that organizations’ data is only utilized to train OpenAI models or foundational models if explicitly permitted by users.

  • Samsung is considering an upgrade for its voice assistant Bixby by incorporating generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Bixby, which was launched in 2017, has been present across Samsung’s devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, and appliances. Unlike traditional voice assistants, generative AI allows for more natural conversations and complex queries.

  • China is playing catch-up with the United States. Late to the game, China seeks to rival OpenAI, a key player in the U.S. AI market dominated by tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. While China lags in foundational large language models (LLMs), it’s narrowing the gap by using open-source LLMs. However, Silicon Valley remains ahead in this fast-moving field.
