  • Smartphones have become part of a massive earthquake detection system. Google collaborated with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and California universities to create an early warning system. When tremors are detected, users receive alerts a few seconds before the shaking starts. These precious seconds can allow people to seek shelter or take safety precautions.

  • The long-term impact of automation on job loss is challenging to predict, but we know that AI doesn’t automate entire jobs. Instead, it automates specific tasks, leaving other aspects of a job untouched. For instance, automated coding tools enhance productivity without replacing programmers entirely.

  • Austrian advocacy group NOYB filed a complaint against social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, accusing it of training its AI with users’ personal data without consent, violating EU privacy law. The complaint focuses on X’s lack of cooperation and mitigation measures, rather than the legality of data processing.

  • Universal Music Group (UMG) and Meta Platforms Inc. (parent company of Facebook) have signed an expanded, global multiyear agreement. The deal aims to provide more opportunities for UMG artists and songwriters to monetize their work across Meta’s social media platforms. While the specific terms remain undisclosed, the focus is on fair compensation for creators and protection against unauthorized AI-generated content.

  • Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign lied about the crowd attending her August 7 rally in Detroit, Michigan. He alleged that a photo of the crowd was created using artificial intelligence and that the crowd “didn’t exist.” However, videos from the event show a large crowd, and local reporters estimated around 15,000 people were present. Experts found no evidence that the image was AI-generated or altered.
