• OpenAI has developed a text watermarking tool designed to identify writings generated by ChatGPT, which could be particularly useful in academic settings to detect plagiarism. However, the company is proceeding cautiously with its release, considering the potential risks and impacts. OpenAI is exploring alternatives and weighing the implications before making the tool publicly available

• Google has rehired Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, the founders of the consumer chatbot startup Character.AI. The startup, which raised over $150 million, developed a freemium service allowing users to create task-specific chatbots. Following its success, including a web service nearing 100 million monthly visits and a popular mobile app, Google’s rehiring move includes several members of Character.AI’s research team.

• IBM has announced the release of Mistral Large 2, a next-generation large language model (LLM) that is now available on IBM watsonx™. This advanced multilingual LLM boasts 123 billion parameters and excels in code generation, mathematics, reasoning, and instruction following. It supports over 80 coding languages and offers significant improvements over its predecessor, Mistral Large. Mistral Large 2 is competitive with leading models, achieving an 84.0% accuracy on the MMLU benchmark.

• The Argentine Ministry of Security is set to launch the Applied Artificial Intelligence for Security Unit (UIAAS), a specialized task force aimed at utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to predict and prevent future crimes. This initiative, led by the director of cybercrime and cyber affairs, will involve members from the Argentine Federal Police and security forces. The UIAAS will employ machine learning algorithms to analyze historical crime data to forecast potential criminal activities and cyber threats, such as malware and phishing attacks.
