• Mustafa Suleyman, a British AI pioneer, has joined Microsoft to lead its newly-formed AI division, Microsoft AI. Suleyman is renowned for co-founding DeepMind, a prominent UK-based AI firm acquired by Google in 2014. His move to Microsoft solidifies the company’s position as an AI leader. In his new role, Suleyman will oversee consumer AI products and research, including Copilot, Bing, and Edge.

• Apple researchers are finally catching up and have developed a groundbreaking method for training large language models (LLMs) called the MM1 model. This innovative approach seamlessly integrates both text and visual information, setting a new standard in AI capabilities. By utilizing a diverse dataset of image-caption pairs, interleaved image-text documents, and text-only data, the MM1 model excels at tasks like image captioning, visual question answering, and natural language inference.

• TacticAI teamed up with Google DeepMind and create tactical suggestions for soccer set-pieces, surpassing even those created by professional club coaches. By analyzing a dataset of 7,176 corner kicks taken by players from Liverpool FC, TacticAI models the interactions between players and predicts outcomes. It recommends optimal player positioning during corners to enhance goal-scoring opportunities.

• Saudi Arabian government is planning to establish a $40 billion fund dedicated to investing in artificial intelligence. This initiative, which has been discussed with venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, aims to position Saudi Arabia as a significant player in the AI landscape.
